Bangladesh Police Arrest Man Over Abusive Comments on PM's Rajshahi Visit Photos

Bangladesh authorities have arrested a man accused of posting abusive remarks beneath photographs of Prime Minister Tareque Rahman's visit to Rajshahi, according to a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs. The suspect, identified as Abu Bakkar Siddique, was taken into custody by members of the Special Response Battalion (SRB-5). The ministry announced the arrest in a press release, as reported by Prothom Alo.

The detention took place on Wednesday afternoon, with the operation carried out around 5:30 pm in the Ramchandrapur area of Parila Union under Paba Police Station in Rajshahi.

Why it matters

The case places the treatment of online speech in Bangladesh under fresh scrutiny. The arrest follows a pattern in which social media posts about senior political figures have drawn rapid state action, and it signals that investigators are prepared to trace anonymous or pseudonymous accounts back to individual users. For ordinary internet users, the episode is a reminder that comments left under public posts can carry legal consequences.

According to the Home Ministry's account, the prime minister travelled to Rajshahi on 20 October, and images from the trip were shared on social media. Siddique was accused of writing the offensive comment beneath that post.

How investigators traced the suspect

The ministry's statement describes a coordinated effort to establish who was behind the comment. Police from Chandrima Police Station in Rajshahi Metropolitan area worked alongside the SRB, the Detective Branch (DB), the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit (CTTC) and the Crime Research Team (CRT) to identify the person responsible.

Once investigators had established the suspect's identity, SRB members questioned his father. During that questioning, the father said Siddique was staying at his maternal uncle's home. Acting on that information, a team from SRB-5's Rajshahi battalion moved to the Ramchandrapur address in Parila Union and detained him there.

The ministry did not specify what legal provisions the arrest was made under, and no further details about the case or the suspect's current status were included in the release.

A wider pattern of online speech cases

The arrest is one of several recent cases in which comments posted about the prime minister have led to police action. Bengali media outlets reported separately on another man accused of making threatening remarks in connection with the prime minister's presence on a bus belonging to the Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET).

According to those reports, the comment referenced a sniper, and the individual was subsequently identified and taken into custody. Dainik Shiksha reported that the person behind the remark had been identified, while bdnews24.com and Bangla Tribune reported the arrest. The Daily Star Bangla also carried coverage of the detention.

The two episodes share a common thread: remarks published on social media platforms, followed by investigative work to identify the account holder and a physical arrest. In both instances, the information reaching the public has come primarily through official statements and media reports rather than court filings.

What the ministry said — and what it did not

The Home Affairs Ministry's release focused on the operational sequence of events: the date of the prime minister's visit, the posting of the photographs, the comment attributed to Siddique, the involvement of multiple police units, the questioning of the suspect's father, and the eventual raid at the maternal uncle's house in Ramchandrapur.

It did not describe the content of the comment in detail, state whether Siddique has been formally charged, or indicate when he might appear before a court. It also did not say whether others are being sought in connection with the same post.

Prothom Alo published the ministry's account of the arrest. CYBEV.io has not independently verified the details of the investigation.

What to watch

Whether Siddique is formally charged and brought before a court will determine how the case develops. The handling of the separate RUET-related arrest will also be worth following, given that both cases involve online comments about the prime minister and have moved quickly from identification to detention.
